In April 2019 I was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma (AN) and after monitoring it for just over 2 years, I underwent Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery in December 2021 at Toronto Western Hospital. The goal of the procedure is to stop the tumour from growing. The radiation and recovery went smoothly, the tumour has so far stopped growing and the plan now is to monitor my tumour with annual MRIs...the next one being in mid-December.
When I was first diagnosed with an AN I was steered towards the Acoustic Neuroma Association of Canada (ANAC) to help with my research of symptoms, treatments, surgery, radiation, recovery, etc. What a difference it has made! ANAC has been my key source of information, medical research and group support. Local chapters across the country host support group meetings where pre and post-surgery members gather to share their experiences, struggles, and successes. ANAC is a liaison to the top doctors in the country and keeps us current on the latest research. In 2020 I joined ANAC's board of directors and am again asking that you join me in supporting this wonderful organization and its members. We want to ensure that ANAC can continue to provide the research, support and contacts AN patients need in order to make the best decisions possible about their treatments.
